Niels Sommer has been a scientific advisor to the Expert Council on Climate Issues (ERK) and a research associate in the Integrated Building Energy Technology department at Fraunhofer IEG since March 2026. Before joining IEG and the ERK, he worked as a project engineer at a design firm specializing in building services engineering. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Energy Engineering and Resource Optimization from Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences before completing his studies with a master’s degree in Environmental Systems Science and Resource Management from the University of Osnabrück. His research focuses on the transformation of non-residential buildings and on issues related to the safe operation of networked building services systems.
